WORK to improve Edinburgh’s Old Town roads, pavements and drainage is due to begin on Monday with some road closures planned.

The City of Edinburgh Council said the 10-month project, which is expected to be complete by July next year, aims to improve road safety and includes the reconstruction of the existing natural stone cobbles.

Work will initially start at Castlehill and George IV Bridge and Upper Bow, on Monday, September 23 with some disruption expected.

The project is split into four stages with some areas of the capital closed to traffic, but the local authority said access for pedestrians and emergency services will be maintained at all times.

The four phases will run consecutively but will temporarily stop during the busy festive period to minimise disruption, the council said.

Work will be carried out Mondays to Saturdays between 7.30am and 5pm.

Temporary parking restrictions will be introduced for safety measures, with on-street signage providing details of specific restrictions, the council confirmed.
