THE Scottish Conservatives appear to have fewer members than the Alba Party, it has been revealed following the appointment of Russell Findlay as their new leader.

Findlay was elected as the new Scottish Tory leader on Friday morning seeing off his two rivals Murdo Fraser and Meghan Gallacher.

He won with just 2565 votes with Fraser securing 1187 and Gallacher 403.

During the election result, it was announced the party had a total of 6941 members who were eligible to vote in the leadership contest – with only 60% of them doing so.

Members from opposition parties were quick to point out that Alex Salmond’s Alba Party had 7507 members according to their last accounts.

The Scottish Tory membership has plummeted by more than a third in just four years, as the party's membership has declined from 11,000 in 2020.

The Scottish Greens also have a larger membership number with 7646 according to their reports.

Reacting to the news the SNP Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Local Government Shona Robison posted simply a side eye emoji with a screenshot of the two membership numbers together.

Speaking after his win was announced, Findlay said the party must “come together as one united team” after a bruising period.

“Let us start the hard work right now to win back public trust," he said.

Findlay is expected to unveil his frontbench team at Holyrood next week and on Sunday, he will be on stage at the UK Conservative Party conference in Birmingham.
