We told how Scottish Labour have blamed the loss on the Winter Fuel Payment cut and the ongoing row over freebies.

Commenting, SNP depute leader Keith Brown (below) said: “This is a fantastic double-win for the SNP and a real vote of confidence from the people of Lochee and Strathmartine.
“Our incredible candidates Lee Mills and Jimmy Black – alongside our amazing activists – took the SNP’s positive message to voters on doorsteps across Dundee and repeatedly heard about betrayal felt following the first few weeks of a Labour Government.”
“Whether it’s millions of pounds of levelling up investment or life-saving support for Scottish pensioners, the Labour Party has shown that nothing is off the table when it comes to their austerity plans.”

Brown continued: “Their own MPs voted for these policies, as well as the two-child cap. These are Labour Party choices that will harm the most vulnerable Scots and tonight we saw the consequences of those decisions – they only have themselves to blame.
“However, voters know the SNP can be trusted to focus on the priorities of the people of Scotland; whether that’s eradicating child poverty, supporting our public services, growing our economy or tackling the climate emergency.
“We will continue to hold the Labour Party to account for their myriad of broken promises, spreading our positive message on doorsteps across the country and delivering for Scotland.”
The Lochee by-election was called following the death of Labour councillor Charlie Malone in July.
The Strathmartine by-election was called after Dundee City Council leader John Alexander – who was an SNP councillor for 12 years – stepped down in August.
Dundee City Council is led by the SNP, with the party now having 16 councillors following the two by-elections.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
