A SECOND man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after an assault which left a man fighting for his life in Orkney.

The victim, aged 38, was attacked in Burnmouth Road, Kirkwall, at about 9.40pm on Tuesday.

He was taken to Balfour Hospital in the town for treatment but later transferred to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. He is said to be in a critical condition.

A woman aged 39 was also taken to Balfour Hospital, in Kirkwall, for treatment.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested and charged, along with a 29-year-old man.

Oscar Mayo, 22, appeared in court on Friday charged with assault to severe injury, permanent impairment, danger to life, and attempted murder as well as assault to injury and danger to life as well as threatening or abusive behaviour.

Mayo, from Kirkwall, made no plea and remains in custody.

The 29-year-old will appear in court on Monday and a report will be forwarded to the Procurator Fiscal.
