COASTGUARD and lifeboat crews have recovered a man’s body from the water near Barra with police treating the death as “unexplained”.

Workers aboard the MV Isle of Mull alerted the emergency services after seeing an object in the water near the island of Barra.

The ferry was unable to stop due to weather conditions, but raised the alarm during the crossing from Lochboisdale to Oban.

A man’s body was then recovered from the water and enquiries remain ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Around 2.35pm on Thursday, October 24, we received a report of a body in the water near the Isle of Barra.

“Emergency services attended and the body of a man has been recovered.

“The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
