A SCOTTISH Labour council leader has been arrested and charged in connection with a domestic assault and a breach of the peace.

Inverclyde Council leader Stephen McCabe is understood to have been arrested at Greenock Police Station and released on bail, appearing in court this morning.

The 60-year-old father-of-four appeared in Glasgow Sherriff Court at 10am.

McCabe has been administratively suspended from Scottish Labour pending the outcome of any investigation.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said:  “A 60-year-old man has been arrested and charged in relation to a domestic assault and a breach of the peace.

“He has been released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

A Labour Party spokesperson said: "The Labour Party takes all complaints seriously.

"They are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures, and any appropriate action is taken.”

McCabe was first elected to the former Inverclyde District Council in 1992 and has led the council since 2007, except a period of six-months in 2011.

He was elected to Inverclyde Council in 1999 and was re-elected in 2003, 2007, 2012 and 2017.

McCabe previously pleaded with Michael Gove to fund local authorities directly after the Scottish Government tied funding from Westminster to accepting the council tax freeze implemented by, at the time, first minister Humza Yousaf.
