KEIR Starmer has congratulated Donald Trump after the former president declared victory in the US election.
Speaking to his supporters at an event in Florida, Trump said the election was a “magnificent victory” for the American people.
A handful of states are still to be declared, although Trump is only just short of the 270 required to officially win the presidency.
Writing on Twitter/X, the Prime Minister said: “Congratulations president-elect Trump on your historic election victory.
“I look forward to working with you in the years ahead. As the closest of allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defence of our shared values of freedom, democracy and enterprise.
“From growth and security to innovation and tech, I know that the UK-US special relationship will continue to prosper on both sides of the Atlantic for years to come.”

Elsewhere, Foreign Secretary David Lammy (below) also offered his congratulations to Trump.
“The UK has no greater friend than the US, with the special relationship being cherished on both sides of the Atlantic for more than 80 years,” he said.
“We look forward to working with you and @JDVance in the years ahead.”
Before leaving the stage in Florida, Trump vowed to not let his supporters down, and told them “it’s time to put the divisions of the past four years behind us”.
He added: “Success is going to bring us together and we are going to start by all putting America first.
“We have to fix it because together we can truly make America great again for all Americans.

“So I want to just tell you what a great honour this is. I want to thank you. I will not let you down.
“America’s future will be bigger, better, bolder, richer, safer and stronger than it has ever been before.”
Harris’s hopes for the presidency have now all but disappeared, as even with votes from the remaining battleground states – Nevada, Arizona, Michigan and Wisconsin – the odds appear stacked against her.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
