A NEW sculpture has been unveiled in Ayr town centre to remember women killed in the Scottish Witch Trials.

A wire sculpture by local artist Vanessa Lawrence has been installed outside the Cutty Sark Centre on Ayr High Street.

It has been placed in remembrance of those accused of witchcraft in South Ayrshire during the Scottish Witch Trials.

The sculpture, called Jonet, depicts a woman looking across the River Ayr towards the Auld Brig – which would have been a familiar sight to a local woman during the era of the Scottish Witch Trials.

In early modern Scotland, between the early 16th century and the mid-18th century, judicial proceedings concerned with the crimes of witchcraft took place throughout the country.
