TWO former MEPs are set to debate Scotland’s best route back into the European Union.

The event, titled Common Ground, is being hosted by the European Movement in Scotland (EMIS) and will see former Labour MEP David Martin and former SNP MEP Alyn Smith debate how to achieve Scotland’s return to the EU.

The pair will also talk about the importance of cross-party working and debate whether Scottish independence or remaining in the UK offers the best route to Scotland again seeing its EU membership.

In the 2016 EU referendum, Scotland voted 62% in favour of remaining in the union and polls have consistently shown the country continues to be strongly pro-EU.

On Wednesday, a new poll from Survation revealed most Scots favoured independence within the EU as their preference for the country’s constitutional future.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer (above) meanwhile has previously said he does not see the UK rejoining the European single market or customs union in his lifetime.

Speaking in July, he said he believed a better Brexit deal was possible but that there would be no return to freedom of movement.

David Clarke, chair of EMIS, said: “Alyn and David are passionate Europeans who share similar views about building an unstoppable momentum that sees us eventually rejoin the EU.

“They will discuss how that momentum is built and the competing claims of independence or union as the most likely route back to Europe.”

EMIS has said the debate is a “must see” for everyone interested in Scotland’s future in Europe.
