Michael Ball hosted his first BBC Radio’s 2 Sunday Love Songs and shared a sweet tribute to the late Stever Wright.
Wright was an icon of radio, presenting programmes on BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2 for more than 40 years and was beloved by listeners.
His death aged 69 shocked the nation in February 2024 as his family shared an emotional statement: “It is with deep sorrow and profound regret that we announce the passing of our beloved Steve Wright.
"In addition to his son, Tom, and daughter, Lucy, Steve leaves behind his brother, Laurence and his father Richard.
“Also, much-loved close friends and colleagues, and millions of devoted radio listeners who had the good fortune and great pleasure of allowing Steve into their daily lives as one of the UK's most enduring and popular radio personalities.”
Following Wright’s passing it was confirmed by the BBC in April that Michael Ball would host Sunday Love Songs.

Ball began his first Sunday Love Songs on June 2 with a sweet and touching tribute to the late DJ and presenter.
He ended the show with a ‘last dance’ dedicated to Wright, sharing: “For this first week the last dance is a very special song.

“It was one of Steve Wright’s favourites, so in memory of Steve, I want you to give someone a hug, make that time for it now. Your partner, your friend, your child, your parent, even your pet.
“And if you’re on your own right now, I’m embracing you with a virtual hug.
“And I want to take this opportunity to thank Steve, his legacy on Radio 2 is immersible, he created love songs and I am so so proud to be carrying the baton for him into the future.
“You are missed friend, and this is for you.”
Many listeners were touched by the sweet notion as on X, formerly Twitter, the user said: “You definitely hit the right note. A balance of Steve's old show and a sprinkling of Michael's magic to bring it into a new phase.”
While another added: “Great show this morning. Loving the tunes, thank you.”
A further added: “In the car, and I’m crying at #LoveLetters #LoveSongs @BBCRadio2 lovely words.”
When it was confirmed Ball would take over, he said: “Steve made Love Songs ‘appointment to listen’ radio.
