THE Downing Street branch of the Scottish independence movement, also known as the Union Unit, has been playing a blinder recently. It advertised for a leader who could make a case which would convince sceptical Scots that they should remain in the Union, but did not consider that knowledge of Scotland might be important.

When they did appoint someone, it was actually a Scot, former MP Luke Graham, but he didn’t last long before he fell foul of the internal politics of Downing Street and was sacked.

Next up was Dominic Cummings’s chum, Oliver Lewis, known as “Sonic”, who lived up to his name in the speed with which he arrived, and departed, apparently at the behest of power behind the PM, Carrie Symonds, without making any impression whatsoever.

Then there was talk that Prince Edward might be despatched to Scotland, to live among us, to show that we really are all John Thomson’s children. I suspect even Duggy the linesman might have had reservations about that one.

And now the word is that there will be a committee, headed by the great man himself, Boris, beloved as much by his loyal subjects north of the Border as he is by all the mothers of his children. What could possibly go wrong?

SO the new “Cabinet Union Strategy Committee” includes no representatives from the elected governments of the three smaller territories. Instead it draws in the three governor generals!

With no input representing the governance wishes of the smaller territories, this is nothing more than a “colonial” unit. I think it’s about time to start a petition to the Council of Europe, suggesting they revoke the UK’s membership rights! By reintroducing colonialism, the UK cannot meet the democratic standards required for Council of Europe membership (or in fact the UN).
