“THERE are three objectives at COP,” one MP told the Daily Mail a few weeks ago.
“Save the planet. Save the country. And stop Sturgeon from getting a photo with Biden.”
Conservative ministers were fearful over Scotland’s First Minister using the COP26 climate summit as a “platform for independence and the SNP”, according to reports.
The National can now report that the Conservative government has failed in at least one of its COP objectives then, as Nicola Sturgeon was photographed chatting and smiling with the US president on the very first night of the conference. Awks.
Biden and Sturgeon were talking at the reception for VVIPs at Kelvingrove in Glasgow. And not only that – Sturgeon received a gift from the president.
A tweet from the First Minister’s official Twitter account reads: “First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is delighted to have received, on behalf of the people of Scotland, a gift from President Biden.
“She was also pleased to welcome @POTUS to Glasgow, and looks forward to him returning to Scotland in future.”

The post was accompanied by a photograph of the decorative bowl given to the First Minister, along with a card reading: “Presented to the Right Honourable Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland, by Joseph R. Biden Jr, President of the United States of America on the occasion of the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference.”
Can you hear that sound? That’s Conservative ministers absolutely fuming away in the background …
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
