MPs are being awarded a rise of £2,200 a year, supposedly in line with the average 2.7% rise in public-sector pay last year. Here are a couple of “levelling up” ideas.

Give every public-sector worker the same £2,200 increase as the MPs or, if this is considered unaffordable, put all the 2.7%s into a big pot and divide it out equally amongst all public-sector employees, including MPs and senior civil servants and heads of public-sector bodies.

If the same rules were applied to employees of private companies – from CEO downwards – for a few years, it could do a wee bit to arrest the rise in inequality.

THE Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority was created in 2011 to deflect criticism of MPs awarding themselves excessive pay rises. In the present high inflationary circumstances, this pay rise award should now be put to a parliamentary vote. Then let the voters reflect.
