TWO letters appeared in Saturday's National. The first complains about the effect on SNP policies and the chance of the party being overtaken in an election by Labour. One can only assume that the writer has no children. Gambling with the future of the planet is like inviting the Grim Reaper to dinner. The Bute House Agreement makes the SNP more aware of our destinies. With luck it will engender a greater concentration on the survival of an independent Scotland. Otherwise, our departure from the crumbling UK will be pointless.

The second letter questions whether the Greens have “lost their moral compass”. It describes “green policy initiatives” as having “crashed and burned”. Perhaps the writer has forgotten that virtually every policy that the Greens have put forward has been blue-pencilled by the English Conservatives. (In this respect I include the Labour party at Westminster, which has become indistinguishable from the Tories.) However, I do agree that maybe the time has come for the Greens to “recycle” their leaders and to stand up to the SNP, which seems to be leaning more and more to the right.
