ARE the air-raid sirens of 1939-45 liable to be heard again? The most alarming piece of news I’ve read was reported in Saturday’s National: “Zelenskyy seeks support for hits on Russian targets”. From the UK Government the Ukrainian President is seeking the deployment of British Storm Shadow missiles to strike deep into Russian territory.
Whilst sympathy and support for the Ukrainian people from Western nations is vital, should we chance a possible escalation into world war three? Would a majority of the UK's citizens think the risk is too great?

What might be the verdict of an independent Scotland? In matters of such gravity the Scottish people must have their say as soon as possible.
On a slightly lighter note, a fraudulent website proves there are folks out there keen to buy a Muiravonside Country Park Highland cow for a pet in their back garden. Sadly not all scams are quite so amusing or harmless. As high-tech IT takes more control of our daily lives, some scams could prove highly dangerous on a global scale.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
