BYE bye Charlie Boy. It’s past time for Scotland to wave cheerio to this monarchy nonsense. “You are not our king” was the headline in Tuesday’s National. The Australians hit the right note.

The royals should pack their bags and Scotland should stop flying the Union flag. Leave the age of subservience to Westminster.

Naturally the bowing and scrapping brigade would be heartbroken. No more titles – the toffs would mortified. There is no place for inherited privilege in a democracy. Ability and merit alone should count, certainly not donor-based politics founded by billionaires.

Come on Scotland, act now, in memory of an independence champion.
