BORDERS trainer Stuart Coltherd has his eye on winning the feature race at Musselburgh today with his 11-year-old Selkirk raider Aye Well, writes Gordon Brown.
The veteran faces seven rivals in the £12,000 Kilmany Handicap Chase, staged over a few yards short of two miles.
Coltherd said: “He’s been showing up very well at home and we’ve just been waiting for a bit of better ground as he doesn’t like it too deep. Our horses have been a bit quiet but some recent runners have shown improved form.
“We’ve given Aye Well a wee break since he disappointed at Wetherby on heavy ground in November but it’s a big factor having James Reveley back on board. He knows the horse inside out and they won three times together last season.”
Top weight is Jack Steel ridden by Richie McLernon for the Lucinda Russell/JP McManus combination.
He has gone up 12lb for his chase debut success at Ayr in October.
Also in the line-up is PeterNiven-trained Blades Lad who scrambled home by a neck over the same course and distance in late November.
Herefordshire trainer Michael Scudamore saddles just his second runner at the East Lothian track in the shape of recent Leicester third Benenden in the Alex Donaldson Handsome Handicap Chase.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
