THIS year saw Scotland reach their first major finals in 23 years. The team’s qualification for the Euros was rightly heralded as historic, and a mighty draw against England at Wembley a fair consolation prize.
Their rivals in that game, which saw 18.4 million people tune in for the then most-watched event of the year, are now in the tournament final.
It is the first final of a major tournament England have played in since 1966, and expectations are high.
Audience figures across the UK are expected to smash the record set by the semi-final against Denmark on Wednesday, which peaked at 27.6 million.

England’s win against the Danes has proven controversial, with people saying the penalty given in extra time for a foul on Raheem Sterling was too light, and a laser was shone onto the face of goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel during that crucial kick.
Nevertheless, Gareth Southgate’s team will meet Italy in the final on Sunday.
The match, which is to be played at Wembley, is expected to go England’s way - with bookmakers offering slightly better odds on them than Italy, but only slightly.
But who do you think will win the Euros? Will we be subjected to “It’s come home” headlines all week long - or will the Italians do as they did in Euro 2012 and beat the English to it.
And who will you be supporting in the final? Our neighbours south of the Border, or gli Azzurri (the Blues)?

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
