Scotland finally ended their run of seven games without a win by defeating Gibraltar in Faro.
In what was a lackluster performance from Steve Clarke's side, the first warm-up game ahead of Euro 2024 was completed in the Portuguese sunshine.
Ryan Christie and Che Adams got on the scoresheet for the Scots, although, it was a game where they really ought to have scored more.
Here's how the squad fared with 11 days to go until the big kick-off in Germany against the tournament's hosts...
Zander Clark 7
Another competitive game under his belt. Not much more to add to an expected quiet evening.
Ross McCrorie 7
His international debut for Scotland. Given the injuries to Nathan Patterson and Aaron Hickey, Clarke is not blessed with an array of options in the right back area. Looked assured and composed throughout, albeit, the level of opposition needs to be considered. Made several galloping runs forward on the overlap. Positives to build upon.
Grant Hanley 6
Looked a dangerous threat from set-pieces. Should’ve probably done better with his effort on nine minutes and then again with an open goal later in the half, although in fairness, he was stretching. Not troubled going the other way.
Ryan Porteous 7
Like his first-half centre-back partner, he was rarely bothered in his defensive duties, but could’ve and probably should’ve done better at attacking crosses. Reading of the game is an obvious strength of his.
Andy Robertson 7
On corner duties and his delivery was more often than not bang on the money. Given the nature of coming up against a team of Gibraltar’s stature, the Liverpool left-back got forward at will, but couldn’t quite notch an assist.
Kenny McLean 7
Showed some neat footwork at points to get out of one or two tricky situations in midfield. Can be satisfied with his efforts.
Billy Gilmour 6
A relatively steady game for the Brighton midfielder. Kept things simple.
John McGinn 7
His teammates struggled badly to get our talisman in the game. Of course, that’s down to the Aston Villa man as well. He’s our big game player though, and he showed his quality with a perfect dinked delivery to set up Adams.
James Forrest 6
Should’ve opened the scoring in the early stages of the game after a great cut-back by the skipper. It was his outing in a Scotland jersey since the Euros in 2021, and he will be hoping he’s done enough to show he can make an impact in Germany.
Ryan Christie 8
Forced their keeper into the first big save of the game, as he palmed away the Bournemouth player’s powerful shot down low to his right. Produced a smart finish to eventually get the team off the mark. Gave the goalkeeper no chance after some intelligent interchange with Shankland.
Lawrence Shankland 6
A rather quiet evening for the Hearts skipper. Got involved, won plenty of fouls and always made himself available. But no chances to score.
Subs:
Liam Cooper (For Hanley, 46’) 4
Serious concern for the Leeds defender after he went down with a knee injury. Had to come off, but was at least walking.
Che Adams (for Forrest, 65’) 7
Came on to play in an unusual front two alongside Shankland. Thunderous finish with a first-time volley to make it 2-0.
Kieran Tierney (for Robertson, 65’) 5
Given the rare chance to play in his preferred position for Scotland.
Ryan Jack (for Gilmour, 73’) 4
An opportunity to impress the head coach.
Callum McGregor (for McLean, 73’) 4
On to get some minutes into the legs.
Scott McKenna (for Cooper, 77’) 3
Replaced the injured Cooper.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
