Kasper Schmeichel 7
Relieved to see early Pasalic header rattle the crossbar and bounce off the line before second effort was headed over. Saved well with his feet to deny the Atalanta star moments later from a close range effort. Called into action to deny Pasalic again in the first-half with header well held. Palmed De Roon effort round the post and was confident in holding driven De Ketelaere strike in second half. A deserved first clean sheet in seven years for Celtic in the Champions League.
Alistair Johnston 6
Forced to walk a bit of a suspension tightrope after he was booked on eight minutes for a mistimed challenge on Zappacosta. Didn't get tight enough to the tricky wing-back in early stages allowing too many dangerous crosses into the box but wised up to the task as the match wore on. Limited in his offensive influence but resolute in defensive duties as part of a solid back four.
Liam Scales 7
Well beaten by Pasalic header after 18 minutes and breathed a sigh of relief as it hit the bar. Showed his intent early on as he regained possession on the halfway line but was then wasteful in his distribution. Didn't have as much time on the ball as in domestic competition but was assured in his defending to help claim a huge point.
Auston Trusty 8
His best evening in Celtic colours in Europe. Questions asked of Celtic defence without Carter-Vickers but Trusty was outstanding in Bergamo. No thrills in his defending but a gargantuan effort in keeping the hosts out. Total composure in the tackle and sensible on the ball on a night where Celtic could barely keep hold of possession.
Alex Valle 7
In from the start in place of Greg Taylor and did himself no harm in the battle for the starting spot at left-back. Undoubtedly would have liked to have had more chance to attack but thrived in the battle defensively. Came closest for Celtic in the closing stages as his deflected effort had to be tipped over the crossbar.
Callum McGregor 6
Kept things ticking over in midfield as best as he could. A calming influence on Celtic on an evening where some players were a little overexcited when they landed on the ball. Firm in the tackle and smart with the ball at his feet - another forced deeper than he'd have liked.
Reo Hatate 6
Didn't have a lot of time on the ball throughout and was reduced to a lesser influential role for Celtic. Suffered from the Atalanta style as midfield was contained and ball wouldn't stick in the attacking areas.
Arne Engels 6
Has obvious quality on the ball but showed his grit instead in Bergamo. Did his duties in midfield to keep structure and make things difficult for Atalanta. Saw a decent whipped strike saved in the first half but didn't have much further opportunity to hurt the hosts.
Nico Kuhn 7
Excellent pressing from the first whistle which almost created an opening but for getting the ball caught up in his feet in the box. Was the biggest threat for Celtic all night as he showed real quality in the final third to beat a man and also earn invaluable free-kicks and relieve his defensive team-mates. Put in a top shift front to back.
Daizen Maeda 6
Did what he always does for Celtic with relentless running on the left flank. Hauled Celtic up the pitch with direct running to cause problems for Atalanta. Like a second defender to help out Valle with his efforts.
Adam Idah 6
Favoured to Kyogo perhaps with an eye to the physical contest with Hien. Did what he could with the long balls played into his feet and little support at times. Gave as good as he got but was too often forced to backtrack to help out his defence rather than stretch the Atalanta defence.
Kyogo Furuhashi (for Idah, 68) 5
Huge opening one minute after coming on but was denied by decent stop. Sent improvised effort over the bar from Valle through ball.
Paulo Bernardo (for Hatate, 68) 5
Strong in his pressing and committed to seeing out the match for his side.
Luis Palma (for Maeda, 75) 4
Flashes of danger but couldn't manufacture a clear chance.
Luke McCowan (for Engels, 75) 4
A special moment for the boyhood fan making his first appearance in the Champions League. Added energy to midfield.
James Forrest (for Kuhn, 81) 3
On for the final ten minutes but was unable to properly land on the ball or create anything.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
