Arne Engels started for Belgium last night against Italy in their Nations League Group B encounter, after which the Celtic midfielder received a number of plaudits from Belgian media.
Domenico Tedesco's side were beaten 1-0 at home by Italy via a Sandro Tonali goal in the 11th minute, with the visitors the better side for the most part.
Nevertheless, Engels – making his first start for his country – was singled out for his vision on the ball and scope for helping build defence into attack.
Belgian media outlet Het Laatste Nieuws (via Google translate) said: "Engels showed maturity and precision in his passing, which was crucial for Belgium's ball possession."
Whereas another publication, De Standaard highlighted his defensive contributions: "Engels was tireless in winning the ball back and displayed impressive stamina throughout the entire match."

Engels was subbed off on 73 minutes for 19-year-old RB Leipzig midfielder, Arthur Vermeeren, with La Libre Belgique also saying: "Engels proved that he is ready for the highest level and can become a mainstay in the Red Devils' midfield."
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
